Less Is More

Two readings this morning in McCheyne illustrate one spiritual principle: less is more. That is, when our resources are limited or we choose to be dependent upon God, He is unleashed in our lives. As the scripture says, "..my strength is made perfect in weakness." In the words of John the Baptist, "He must increase, I must decrease."

Gideon was God's chosen warrior to deliver Israel, but before the battle, "in order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her," God downsized the army to 300 men. Impossible odds! But the perfect formula for victory. Confronted with a hungry crowd of thousands, Jesus' disciples were overwhelmed at His suggestion that they feed them. Jesus had them where He wanted them - and us. Out of five loaves of bread and two fish, there was a bountiful meal - with leftovers!

So long as we are independent, so long as we don't need God for the struggle, we leave Him no room to act. Lord, teach me that in the battles of this life, less is more.
