My recent journey through Leviticus has been less slogging that before. As I reflect on the forward meanings of the Law, it is challenging to think of how the words, "You must not live according to the customs of the nations I am going to drive out before you" apply to our culture. The core message of the Law is to separate a people so that they are different from the world and reflect in themselves the holiness of God. And so the fixation with blood, water and fire have very real associations with behaviors that matter to God and define us as people.
The call to holiness first went out to Abraham - it was a call to a place of blessing, to a land "flowing with milk and honey" that would be a haven for the people of YAWEH. The call today is not geographical but cultural. Jesus said, "You are the light of the world," or, we might say, "the light of your world." Wherever God has placed us among unbelievers is the place of blessing - both to ourselves and others - if we choose not to live according to their customs and to honor God with our lives.
