The Culture of Atonement

Leviticus 14 details the process of atonement for those afflicted with skin disease and for incidents of mildew. In our culture, it's no more complicated than trips to the drug and hardware stores. But in the Old Testament culture of atonement, cleansing involves ceremony, reflection, time and an utter dependence upon God. How far we have come!

Surely the ceremonial laws were instructive and point to the Age of Grace, but taking the time to read through them reminds me of how seriously God views sin and how careful I ought to be to detect it and seek atonement. This day marks for me a return to a more regular time of introspection and reflection upon my own life before God. May He help me pursue purity and Christ-likeness.
