Worship is a Big Thing

Have you ever read Exodus 35? There, for the first time ever, God gets specific about the Sabbath. He has already hallowed the seventh day (20.9-11) but now he tells Israel what that means. Worship was to be a total sensory experience involving touch, smell, sight and hearing. This chapter launches God's big plan for worship that extends through Leviticus and includes sacred garments, articles, regulations, materials and behaviors. God begins by outfitting the place of worship and the worshipers, then prescribes the laws of sacrifice and purification. These two seem to be central: the sacrifice necessary because of sin and purity that satisfies a holy God.

Music, at least as a formal part of worship, isn't added until David's reign, but clearly Israel was taught to sing the praises of God, adding yet another dimension to whole-life worship. Sure this is Old Testament and we now worship "in spirit and in truth," not in an earthly tabernacle but wherever two or three are gathered, and so on. But worship is still a big thing! It is our duty as believers to preserve the size of our worship as we adapt to a changing culture.
