Sometimes we underestimate the power of decision-making. There are some things that are outside of our control, and we must "accept the things we cannot change." But, in my experience, most of life is manageable by proper decisions. It goes without saying that these decisions ought to be informed by the Scripture and influenced by the Holy Spirit, but in the end I am the one who must say "yes" or "no."
Jacob's decision to go to Bethel at God's direction included a charge to his family to "get rid of the foreign gods you have with you and purify yourselves...." (Genesis 35.2). Those decisions made, the terror of God fell on the towns they left and Jacob and his family traveled safely. Those decisions also led to God's continued blessing on his family (v.11) and ultimately the deliverance of the Jews through Joseph (ch. 36ff).
God help me to make right decisions and to watch over my family the way Jacob did, that we might enjoy your blessing forever!
